Summary:

You want to be a successful business leader, but you’re not sure where to start. ⁣

It can be tough to figure out what it takes to become a great leader. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and what works for one person might not work for another. ⁣

That’s why I’ve put together this 4 Steps To Become A Successful Business Leader guide. ⁣

Listen in for more to find out what you need to know about leadership – from developing a positive mindset to making decisions, I’ll walk you through it all!

Leaders are made, not born.

This is excellent news…because it means that anyone – truly, ANYONE – can become a successful leader in their business. All it takes is a bit of intention, practice, and time to cultivate the skills necessary.

Why leadership matters

If you’ve been in business for a while, have a solid list of clients, and produce stellar and consistent results for your clients, then you’re either already at the point or are near the point where every person and process in your organization relies on you. People are waiting for you to deliver results, to call the shots, to give the go-ahead, and everything in between.

And as much as this can feel powerful and even “doable” for the time being, you will eventually burnout. Believe me when I say this is a “when” not an “if”-type situation. Ideally, before it gets to that point, you will have guided and empowered your employees (I prefer to call them “teammates”) to take on some of these responsibilities. But doing so will not be possible without good leadership skills. And that’s exactly what I’m here to help you build.

Step 1 Successful Business Leader

#1 : Create a clear vision for how you want to be PERCEIVED and what you want to ACHIEVE as a leader

When you create a clear vision, you get clarity about what you’re out to achieve through the leadership development process.

This involves asking questions such as:

  • What does leadership mean to you?
  • What would it look like for your team?
  • How would you like your teammates to respond to you?
  • How would you define a successful leader-teammate relationship?

You’ll stay spinning on that hamster wheel without getting into specifics about your goals as a leader. Avoid that by always remembering: “Clarity is queen.”

Step 2 Successful Business Leader

#2 Be introspective and gain a solid understanding of your own capabilities

A tell-tale sign of a good leader is not someone perfect, but someone who knows themselves well. They have a deep understanding of what they excel in, where there’s room for improvement, and where they fall right in the middle of the spectrum.

I encourage you to take time to really dig deep and analyze yourself and your path so far. What have you “done right”? What could be worked on? What skills do you feel haven’t been utilized in the ways they could be?

Remember: in the same way that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, a weakness in one role could mean strength in another.

Either way, building that understanding of your own abilities will ultimately be what helps you find that understanding of others.

Step 3 Successful Business Leader

#3 Be intentional about the kind of work environment you create

When you’re stepping into a leadership role, you’re not operating in a vacuum.

Not sure what I mean by that. Let me clarify.

There is a container that encompasses your leadership that can include many forces at play, a few of them being:

  • Work environment
  • Rules of operation
  • Your definition of success
  • Rewards
  • Adjustments

All of these are defined and influenced by you, so it’s crucial that you’re intentional when you start building your leadership dynamic.

Step 4 Successful Business Leader

#4 Maintain a consistent flow of honesty and vulnerability between you and your team

There are two ways to do this:

Build a feedback loop.

Frequently asking for and providing honest feedback helps develop healthy relationships with your team. Additionally, it’ll keep you grounded in reality rather than lost in what you want it to be.

Be authentic and appropriately vulnerable.

We put a lot of pressure on ourselves as entrepreneurs… especially in the hustle and bustle reality of modern times.

But here’s the thing: no one (truly) expects you to have all the answers and act perfectly in every scenario. In fact, people tend to greatly respect others who are confident and humble enough to admit they were wrong in a given situation. That said, don’t forget to be vulnerable when the time is right.

Speak of your shortcomings. Set intentions to be better. APOLOGIZE. Truly…the power of a genuine apology can NEVER be overstated.
