When you first started thinking about opening your business, did you picture what your day-to-day would look like?
Did you see yourself with a completely filled schedule? Or did you see yourself spending more time with family than ever before, sometimes even knocking off early at the end of the week?
I think it’s safe to say we probably all leaned more towards the latter.
Now that you’ve finally said YES to your dreams and pulled the trigger, does this vision still feel possible to you? Does the freedom still feel tangible?
Most of my clients answer “no” to this during our very first session. They’ve lost hope that they can find the work-life balance that they set out to find from the very beginning. But the thing is: it IS possible if they can find that missing piece.
…And that missing piece?
The RIGHT systems and processes.
Here’s what I mean.
1. Let the structure set you free.
When you’re a service-based business, it can be easy to believe the myth that every client is different and, therefore, customized solutions must be created for each one.
FALSE!
You do not need to start from scratch every time you take on a new client. Doing so tends to put a halt on your progress because it::
– leaves you redoing the same work, just in a different way
– allows you to make simple, preventable mistakes
– keeps you from gaining momentum
When you can boil down what you do to its simplest forms, you give yourself enough ability to streamline the process and reduce the amount of time it takes to get something done.
2. Doing it once but getting paid forever.
You should do some things as a business owner but not forever. The key is to leverage your knowledge to create a process for others to follow. How? First, you should have an understanding of what the task is and what the desired outcome is. Then the goal should be to create the simplest process that gets the job done reliably.
Once you accomplish this, you can use automation and delegation to get far more value out of your time.
Delegation can set you free. In fact, it’s the only logical next step on the path towards scaling your business.
When you learn how to delegate, you:
- gain opportunity costs
- allow other people to test out their genius
- create the time and freedom for us to do what makes us happy
Automation is all about efficiency, productivity, and effectiveness. There are a lot of minimal tasks that might seem insignificant big-picture-wise but are actually crucial to the process. Anytime we trigger information flowing from one person to the next automatically, we eliminate the opportunity for the flow to slow down.
3. Minimize distractions.
When we streamline processes, we minimize distractions. Distractions are one of our biggest obstacles – both as an owner and as an employee – to getting things done. When people have the resources and tools to get certain tasks done quicker, this automatically solves the problems that come up when people feel pressed for time.
Final Thoughts
For so many of us (myself included), implementing systems and processes in your business feels like a scary thing to take on at first.
Why? Because it involves relinquishing control (something us business owners aren’t huge fans of). But as much of a difficult transition it may be for us mentally and emotionally, it won’t be long before the benefits make it all worthwhile.
So, when in doubt:
1) provide structure
2) delegate and automate
3) minimize distractions.
