“In a great romance, each person plays a part the other really likes.” ~ Elizabeth Ashley

It’s easy to fall into a routine in a marriage where romance falls by the wayside and love becomes routine instead of exciting and passionate. Many couples believe it has to be that way. Let me be blunt. It doesn’t.

There are plenty of things that can be done to maintain the spark in a marriage. Below are seven great ways to keep romance alive.

Have Date Nights Regularly

Date nights are a great way to get time alone with your spouse. Plus, it’s an opportunity for you to have fun and reconnect. You should have date nights regularly to keep the romance alive in your marriage. Taking time out of your busy schedule and spending it with your spouse is important.

It’s also important that you both enjoy yourselves on these dates! Be sure to do something that both of you like doing so there will be no fighting over who picks where they want to go. And if your budget doesn’t allow much spending, try making a homemade dinner together or going for a walk. As long as you’re getting quality time with one another, any activity will work.

Take Turns Planning Surprises For Each Other

A great way to keep the romance alive in your marriage is by planning surprises for each other. This should be done as often as possible, but at least once a week. Try not to plan anything too expensive. Keep it simple.

There are plenty of other ways to keep the romance alive without spending lots of money. It doesn’t mean you can’t do that from time to time, but don’t make it a habit. The point is, use your imagination. Don’t forget to surprise each other sexually from time to time.

“Fight less, cuddle more. Demand less, serve more. Text less, talk more. Criticize less, compliment more. Stress less, laugh more. worry less, pray more. With each new day, find new ways to love each other even more.” ~ Dave Willis

Make Time For Cuddling

Making time for cuddling is a great way to keep romance alive in a marriage. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or perfect; just take some time each day to snuggle and reaffirm your love for one another.

Don’t forget to whisper to one another when you cuddle. I mention the sensual power of whispering all the time with clients and people. There’s nothing like it.

Just because life gets busy doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to have fun with your spouse. Create new memories together.

Express Your Love Regularly

If you want to keep romance alive in your marriage, you need to make it a priority. Say the words, “I love you” regularly. Both of you may know it, but there’s nothing like expressing it verbally. It has a profound effect on the heart. Make love. Don’t just have sex.

When you have arguments and get mad at each other, don’t stop making love to each other. Making love is a great elixir. Don’t stop taking it.

“I like to think that as I get older I’m getting better at spending time with people who have qualities that make them worth spending time with.” ~ Samantha Power

Do Things Together That You Both Enjoy.

Spending time together is essential to keeping the romance alive. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. Just spend time talking and listening to one another. Go to a hotel for a weekend once or twice a month.

Take a pottery class together. Just find things both of you enjoy and do them together.

Be Each Other’s Best Friend.

A strong friendship is the foundation of any good relationship, so make sure you nurture yours. Talk about your hopes and dreams, share your fears and worries, and just enjoy each other’s company.

Plan Special Getaways Together.

Whether it’s a weekend at a bed and breakfast or a week-long trip abroad, planning regular trips away from home will help keep the spark alive in your marriage.

There are many more tips I can give, but these seven will do at this juncture. I hope they prove useful. For Relationship/Life Coaching and Resources, check out The Heart Matters Link Tree
